The International Court of Justice (ICJ) was created in 1945 with the purpose of providing advisory opinions on legal disputes between nations. For CMUNCE 2010,the ICJ will focus on two main cases: Bosnia and Herzegovina v. Serbia and Nicaragua v. the United States of America (1986). Delegates will take on the role of the judges from different nations represented in the ICJ and form an advisory opinion for each of the two cases.
For the case between Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia, delegates will decide whether or not the entire nation of Serbia should be held accountable for the genocide that occurred in Bosnia due to the actions of military commander Ratko Mladic and the damages entitled to Bosnia. The second case, Nicaragua v. the United States of America, will require the delegates to decide whether or not the United States participated in military and paramilitary activities against Nicaragua, thereby violating International Law, and if so, whether or not the US must give reparations to Nicaragua.
