Committee: The Tweed Ring

Corruption. Greed. Extortion. The Tweed Ring.

The year is 1867. William “Boss” Tweed has manipulated the city of New York to become both the Chairman of the Tammany General Committee and the Grand Sachem of Tammany Hall. Now on the brink of political plunder, he and his cohorts will collude to create possible schemes for the ring to embezzle huge amounts of money from the city. They will debate methods of bolstering Tammany Hall's appeal in New York City’s immigrant communities and find innovative ways of infiltrating city and state politics. Will the ring be able to maintain its scope and power without revealing its corruption to the public?

Note from the Chair

Delegates in the Tweed Ring are to write a one- to two-page paper that gives a general description of how they plan on using their character's role and realm of expertise when discussing the three topics outlined in the background guide. This is not a formal position paper; it can either be written in paragraph or bullet form. The purpose of this is to make sure that all delegates will be prepared to contribute ideas to discussion throughout the conference. Any questions regarding the paper can be sent to Margaret Robotham () and Sarah Martin (). Thanks!
