Tibet 2025: Death of the Dalai Lama
Three years ago on July 6, 2022, the Dalai Lama passed away. Officially the highest spiritual and political leader of Tibet, he was a symbol of peace, intelligence, and happiness to peoples all around the world. The man had jokes. His death, however, did not last long. In accordance with Buddhist tradition, the Dalai Lama’s spirit has been reincarnated and currently resides somewhere in the world as a young boy, waiting to be identified. To China, finding the boy presents the chance to instate a 15th Dalai Lama sympathetic to Communist rule. But to the Central Tibetan Administration—Tibet’s government in exile—his discovery is seen as a potential expiration date on their people’s right to self-determination.
Tibet has undergone significant change over the past decade. Heavy investment from Beijing has spurred the region’s development and won it the support of many Tibetans.
Meanwhile, the Dalai Lama has expanded his reign as the world’s most popular leader. As His Holiness once said, “Happiness is not something ready made. It comes from your own actions.” What will you do to be happy?
