Frequently Asked Questions

Registration

  • What is the registration timeline for CMUNCE in January 2024 ?

    • Please visit our Registration page on our website for all details pertaining to the registration timeline for CMUNCE XXIII. Registration opens on September 18th, 2023, and we encourage you to register early in order to secure your spots for our conference.

  • What forms are required to complete the registration process?

    • Once you have completed the registration, within a week you will receive an email shortly afterward with Code of Conduct and Liability Waivers to be completed and turned in with committee assignments.

  • Is there a maximum number of advisors we can bring? 

    • Four official advisors are permitted per delegation. These advisors will receive all communication from CMUNCE. Additional chaperones will not have official advisor status and will not be able to access committee sessions or receive other advisor privileges.

  • Is there a maximum number of delegates we can register?  

    • In an effort to make the conference more accessible, CMUNCE does not allow for delegations consisting of more than 30 delegates. Please reach out to us if you have any questions regarding this policy.

Travel & Hotel

  • If we are arriving to NYC after/during Opening Ceremonies, what should we do? 

    • If you have to miss check-in at Columbia for any reason, please inform us as soon as your travel plans are confirmed. We will organize an alternate check-in appointment and work to help your delegates to the first committee session on time. Late check-in will take place in the lobby of Hamilton Hall.

  • Do we have to stay for Closing Ceremonies? 

    • Attendance at Closing Ceremonies is not required. However, we are unable to ship any awards and PDFs of certificates will be emailed upon request. We encourage you to stay for Closing Ceremonies and show support for other delegations and our conference staff! 

Committees

  • What committees are recommended for beginner delegates?

    • CMUNCE recommends that new delegates participate in GA committees, and delegates with more experience participate in our small, fast-paced crisis committees.

  • How does CMUNCE assign committees to delegations?

    • Taking into account Committee Preferences responses, CMUNCE will spread delegates out as much as possible over our slate of committees. Delegations can also indicate a preference to opt-out of a certain committees due to the sensitive nature of the material.

  • Any resources to learn more about crisis committees? 

    • To learn more about crisis committees, we highly recommend thoroughly reading your background guide in full. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to email your crisis director as they are there to help you throughout the conference. Other resources include Best Delegate and other websites that have information on the how-to’s of Model UN. 

  • What are CMUNCE’s expectations for delegate behavior in committee? 

    • We expect all delegates to act in appropriate behavior in committee to maintain a safe environment throughout the conference. Any form of delegate misconduct will be reported to our staff and your advisor and appropriate action will be taken, including potential removal from the conference. Please ask any questions so that we can clarify expectations. 

  • How will awards work?

    • Every committee session will count towards individual awards. The number of awards will depend on the committee size and overall performance of the delegates. All delegations will automatically be considered for delegation awards. 

  • What is Midnight Crisis?

    • CMUNCE is excited to bring back our Midnight Crisis session at on Friday night of our conference in the InterContinental Times Square hotel. Roughly 20 percent of our crisis committees will be selected for this one-of-a-kind committee experience! Delegations are highly encouraged to stay at the InterContinental Times Square hotel for the chance to participate!


Health & Safety

  • Are COVID-19 vaccinations required? 

    • No. According to Columbia University’s visitor policies, COVID-19 vaccinations are not required to attend on campus. While we recommend all delegates and advisors take preventative measures against COVID, vaccinations are not required to attend CMUNCE.

  • Are all delegations, including Independent Delegates, required to bring a chaperone/advisor?

    • Yes. All delegates must bring an adult chaperone to CMUNCE. For independent delegates, this may include a parent or guardian. The advisor/chaperone must be on campus during the duration of the conference and must be reachable via email and phone at all times.

  • How can I best ensure the safety and wellbeing of my delegates? 

    • It is the advisor’s responsibility to ensure the safety and well-being of delegates. At any point throughout the conference, please notify us if there any concerns from your delegates. We appreciate overcommunication. We encourage delegates from your school to create group chats, share phone numbers, maintain a buddy system, or have some way to keep in contact. 

Miscellaneous

  • Will advisors be able to navigate committee rooms to sit in on sessions and observe debate? 

    • Yes. Advisors will be provided the opportunity to step into rooms and observe debate as long as they are wearing their advisor name tag. Advisors may not interrupt debate.

  • Will there be CMUNCE merchandise this year?

    • Yes. We will have CMUNCE merchandise available for purchase over the conference weekend. Please stay tuned for more details, including our great designs!

  • Will there be a bag/luggage check at Closing Ceremonies after we check out of our hotel? 

    • Yes. CMUNCE will be offering a complimentary bag/luggage check service on Sunday morning of the conference in case you must check out of the hotel prior to the end of the day. Please make sure to remove all valuables and necessary items as CMUNCE is not responsible for any damage/theft/loss and you will not be able to access your bag/luggage until the end of Closing Ceremonies.  

Columbia & Exploring NYC

  • Where is Columbia University located? 

    • All committee sessions will take place in academic buildings at Columbia University. Our campus is located in Morningside Heights in Upper Manhattan, which is encompassed by beautiful parks, including Riverside Park and Central Park, and many options for food from many cultures around the world. To access our campus, you can take the 1 train up to 116th Street-Columbia University. We have public safety officers throughout our campus to maintain school security. 

  • What are some good food options around Columbia? 

    • Popular places to eat around campus include, but are definitely not limited to, The Hungarian Pastry Shop, Thai Market, Tom’s Diner, Anar, Absolute Bagels, Roti Roll, Symposium, and Banh. Many of these places offer vegetarian, vegan, kosher, and halal options as well. 

  • Any tips on navigating NYC? 

    • We highly recommend using Google Maps or Apple Maps to navigate New York City. Please aware of which direction your subway is heading (uptown versus downtown) and be aware of transfers. Ask for help if you need it!

  • How should we travel around NYC? 

    • We recommend using public transportation, whether with bus or subway. To access the MTA, you do not need to purchase a metrocard; you can just tap your phone on the scanner if you have a credit/debit card, Apple Pay, or Google Pay. Remember to plan ahead and anticipate delays—it will be a holiday weekend!
