SOCHUM: The Third Committee of the General Assembly

GENERAL ASSEMBLY COMMITTEE

The Social, Humanitarian, and Cultural Committee (SOCHUM) focuses on issues at the intersection of human rights, social development, and humanitarian efforts. For CMUNCE XXV, two topics have been proposed for consideration, one of which will be selected by delegates as the focus of debate.

In Bosnia and Herzegovina, nearly three decades after the Dayton Peace Agreement, ethnic and political divisions threaten to destabilize post-conflict governance. Recent measures by the Serb-majority entity Republika Srpska to limit state-level judicial and security authority have renewed concerns about secession, democratic blacksliding, and asymmetrical federalism. These developments raise broader questions about state sovereignty, minority protection, and the role of international actors in cases of internal ethnic conflict.

Alternatively, the issue of human trafficking along global migration routes remains one of the world’s most persistent humanitarian crises. Across the Sahel, North Africa, and South Asia, traffickers exploit displaced populations amid conflict and poverty, while limited enforcement hinders prevention and victim protection. Addressing this challenge requires coordinated international frameworks to improve data sharing, strengthen law enforcement capacity, and expand access to rehabilitation and reintegration services for survivors.
