Venezuelan Crisis of 2026

SPECIALIZED GENERAL ASSEMBLY COMMITTEE

Venezuela is in crisis. President Nicolás Maduro’s regime is losing its hold on the country and his legitimacy continues to be contested. Protestors fill the streets as evidence of corruption in the nation’s administration has led to major discontent. Military surveillance, police brutality, and state violence are at levels not seen in years in Latin America. Rising inflation and poverty have produced one of the largest migration crises in the world, with an estimated 8 million people fleeing the country. The nation’s over-reliance on oil has led to near economic collapse, and pressure from the United States and other countries has led to further and further constriction of Venezuela’s industries. There are rumors that even among Maduro’s most loyal supporters, his own cabinet, there are those that are planning a coup, or that they have given up on his regime.

As high level political officials and key figures in the opposition, you must address Venezuela’s economic, humanitarian, and political crisis. Are negotiations still possible amidst such instability? Will Maduro peacefully relinquish the presidency, be violently ousted by his own military or the opposition, or simply stay in power? What if a foreign nation decides to intervene? How will democracy be reconstructed?
